Helpful Tips for Driving in the Snow

Severe winter weather is hazardous and scary especially if you have to drive in it. There are certain precautions you need to take when the time comes. Here at Volvo of Fort Washington, we would like to remind drivers everywhere to be careful while driving during snowy conditions. Whether you bought one of our used Volvo cars in Montgomery County, PA, or a brand new one, here are some helpful tips for driving in the snow that you need to know.

Don't drive in the snow at all if it isn't necessary!

If you really have to go somewhere, be extra cautious.

Be sure to completely clean off your car, including every window and mirror. Don't forget to wipe the snow off your roof. If snow falls off the roof of your car while you're driving, it can impair the other vehicles driving nearby. Furthermore, you should check all of your tires for their air pressure and tread depth to make sure they are at appropriate levels that can handle the conditions. Here are a few other tips:

  • Don't tailgate! Leave extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
  • Don't drive if you're too tired. Being awake and alert is critical to reducing the risk of making mistakes.
  • If you want to warm up your vehicle before leaving, don't do so in an enclosed area, such as a garage. You need open space.
  • Never, under any circumstances, mix radial tires with other types of tires.
  • Keep at least a half tank of gas in your vehicle to prevent the gas line from freezing.
  • Avoid using your parking brake while it's cold, or if it's raining or snowing.
  • When driving on slippery surfaces, avoid using cruise control.
  • As always, wear your seatbelt.

When the roads are snowy and icy during the winter, it is critical that you are vigilant. Be patient and take it easy, so everyone gets to their destination safely.
